The Largest Jury Awards Nationwide
Groundbreaking Car Accident Verdicts:
Car accidents can result in devastating injuries, financial burdens, and emotional trauma. In some cases, victims decide to seek justice and compensation for their losses in court. While every case is unique and results vary, there have been some noteworthy, record-breaking jury awards in car accident cases nationwide. Let’s take a closer look at a few of these landmark verdicts.
1. $150 Billion Verdict in Texas
In what is considered the largest jury award in history, a Texas jury in 2011 awarded $150 billion to the family of Robert Middleton. Robert was severely burned in 1998, on his eighth birthday, in a horrific assault by another teenager. He later died from cancer caused by his burn injuries. Although not a traditional car accident case, it involved a car as the young boy was tied to a tree, doused in gasoline, and set on fire.
2. $4.9 Billion Verdict in California
In 1999, a Los Angeles jury awarded a staggering $4.9 billion to the victims of a fiery car crash involving a Chevrolet Malibu. The plaintiffs, six passengers, including four children, were rear-ended by a drunk driver, causing their car’s fuel tank to explode. The jury found General Motors liable for placing the car’s fuel tank in a dangerous position, leading to the explosion. This award was later reduced on appeal, but it remains one of the largest car accident verdicts in U.S. history.
3. $269.5 Million Verdict in Florida
A Florida jury in 1996 awarded $269.5 million to a woman who was left in a vegetative state following a car accident. The woman’s car was struck by a truck owned by Domino’s Pizza, which the jury found to be speeding at the time of the accident.
These landmark verdicts underscore the serious, often life-changing impact of car accidents and the crucial role the justice system can play in holding negligent parties accountable. They serve as reminders that victims have a right to seek compensation for their losses.
